Data centers are driving a massive increase in power demand across the country, and these facilities use as much as 40% of their power to cool the servers—which results in large quantities of low-temperature waste heat.
The data center industry has a prime opportunity to reuse that wasted heat by sending it off to nearby factories and buildings, thus transforming it from an unwanted byproduct into a productive energy resource. And because the heat can then return to data centers at a lower temperature (for use in cooling), the technology can reduce energy consumption for both data centers and their offtakers.
In a new white paper, David Gardiner and Associates explores a variety of policies—including financial incentives, permitting requirements, and more—that states could enact to encourage greater adoption of data center heat reuse. This webinar featured an overview of DGA’s white paper, as well as look at project examples from the U.S. and Europe.
